SEPTEMBER 22, 2023, THE FIRST FULL DAY OF FALL

Woke up this morning in the beautiful Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico. No place I’d rather be.

It’s been a hot, dry summer, and the 55 degrees feels good. Here on the porch, I am listening to the sweet music of elk calls. The rut is in full swing.

The cottonwoods down by the creek and the aspens on the ridge are just starting to turn color. In another week or so the red delicious apples and Bartlett pears in my neighbor, Ken’s, orchard will be just right.

It is the season of the outdoors, the season of the harvest, the season of reflection, the season of thanks for our many blessings. I feel like the luckiest man on earth! I have our family, now four generations deep. I have good friends to share our lives. I have a wonderful, loving wife, who has supported me through some rough times last year.

I am here in my little piece of God’s beautiful world. I am not rich in material things, but I am in things that matter. I have something that most of the very rich people can never have: I have enough.

Thanks for looking in on the website. There are a few new things we just added. For those of you who have looked at Life Ain’t A Dress Rehearsal, I hope you found something you like among the pages. I'll try to get some more updates soon. Right now I have wood to chop for the coming cool spell, dogs waiting to go on a run, and a beautiful day to go out and enjoy!

Life Ain't a Dress Rehearsal

It’s been a lot of years since I strapped myself into an Air Force fighter jet.
I have a lot of good memories, particularly of my time at Edwards AFB with the bunch at Test Pilot School.
I was doing some work around the cabin recently and a three ship of F-22s from Holloman flew over.
I thought, “Damn, those guys (or gals) are having a good time!”
I went inside and got my notebook and wrote down “The New Crew”. Hope you guys enjoy it.

The New Crew

The New Crew

I look to the skies when I hear that roar
That used to be me many years before.
But now it belongs to the kids who were born
Long after my time in a different world.

We’d strap in the seat at the break of day
Light the fires, take the active, then up and away.
We’d leave the ground to a world now 3D,
The world’s best roller coaster, and it’s all free!

We’d loop and roll and dive and soar
And chase the mach in our old F-4.
First thing in the day it was stick and throttle,
And the end of the day it was buddies and bottle.

But fate or gravity always wins.
One way or the other the flights will end.
The torch is passed to a brand new crew
Along with the adrenalin thrill we knew.

I’m lucky, I lived to be old and grey,
But I sure do miss those good old days.

LIVES IN POETRY NEWSLETTER posted July28, 2023

Hi friends! Welcome to the first edition of our newsletter.
We plan to publish this on a not-so-regular basis, probably about monthly.
As I am writing this, I am in our cabin in the beautiful Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico.
I “discovered” the Sacramentos in 1973 when I was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base
near Alamogordo, NM. I decided that, unless I found a place that I liked better, I would retire here.
It took a while! We finally did last year when we bought a great place near High Rolls, NM.
We had rented a place in Mayhill, NM, for six years prior to buying the cabin,
but we wanted our own place. For all of you who read or write or both,
most of you will agree that the most satisfying place to do it is away from the hustle,
bustle, and strife of the cities. That is what I found here.

I hope you have found your special place. I’m glad you have found us!
